Musical biography, roots of Def Leppard

Sure, there were bands that rocked harder. But none defined 80’s hard rock better than Def Leppard. Unique among the new wave of British Heavy Metal, the band emphasized melody over heavy riffs – vastly expanding their sonic appeal.

Founded in Sheffield by bassist Rick Savage and guitarist Pete Wills in 1977, singer Joe Elliot joined several months later and brought the name – Def Leppard. Mott the Hoople and T-Rex were among the trio’s early influences.
