Indeed. David’s ears are considered the best in the industry.

Arthur Insana

Private Coach

Locations: Remote (Skype/Telephone)

Specialties: Audiobook

When it comes to contributing industry perspective, L.A.-based Arthur G. Insana has that covered. He’s participated in and led (and literally covered) just about every part of the audio business.

Arthur (his nieces and nephew call him “Uncle Artie”) is a multi-award-winning pioneer in the resurgence of audio theatre, having produced and directed some of the highest-grossing and most elaborate sound-design-intensive audiodramas ever – including the full-cast, full-production Star Wars: Dark Empire series for Time Warner/Lucasfilm, and The Historian, a multi-cast bestseller for Time Warner.

Of audiodrama, he notes what voice actors add to the storytelling process: “One of the true joys about coaching aspiring narrators is witnessing how they come to embrace Theatre of the Mind… using the power of voice to bring a writer’s words to life.”

All in all (and counting), Arthur is credited with …
• 1,000+ audio productions for most of the major publishing companies
• 40+ best-selling audiodramas, audiobooks, and audio documentaries (N.Y. Times, Publishers Weekly)
• 10 Audie nominations
• 3 Audie wins
• 9 audio productions named “Best of Year”

Wait, wait, there’s more … Arthur has extensive experience in reporting, editing and managing a wide variety of magazine and editorial operations on a national level, including the managing editor position at On Location Magazine and Shape (a women’s health and fitness publication), and U.S. features/film editor for Media Press International. In addition, he has covered business, advertising, media, entertainment and technology for Film & Video Magazine, Screen Magazine, Millimeter Magazine, Post Magazine, Location Update, Advertising Age, TVIndustry.com, Kabang.com, iMediaConnection.com, and others.

Insana has edited 10 books on screen and television writing and film/digital movie production, as well as two college-level science textbooks for California Sate University, Long Beach. He is also widely experienced as a graphic designer and is developing original content for TV, Internet TV, film and the Web. This includes documentary, informational, live-action and animation projects.

In addition to coaching at Edge Studio, Arthur is president of InsanaMedia.com, a full-service creative media company providing audio/video production, writing/editing services, Web/print graphic design, corporate communications, and radio/TV advertising.

He recently launched TheMillenniusGroup, a creative networking group for writers, producers, directors, actors, artists and entrepreneurial thinkers.

He’s also in the process of re-launching www.the-future.com, aiming to make it the premier portal for chronicling new achievements in all areas of human endeavor.

Speaking of bringing things to life, he also brings a number of other activities into his own life, including creating digital art, writing fiction, blues guitar, and tennis.

Haneen Arafat Murphy

Class Instructor

DEMO

Haneen has been “talking for a living” for nearly 30 years. Since she began in radio in college, she’s had a love of working behind a mic and a natural curiosity to expand her skills.

From her first days as a freshman DJ at The University of North Texas (one of the nation’s premiere jazz schools), Haneen had access to world-renowned musicians and music. She honed her interviewing skills in conversations with many jazz luminaries. And through work at her first commercial radio station, in Dallas, she delved further into copywriting, news writing, commercial production, audio editing and music scheduling.

Upon graduation with a degree in Radio/TV/Film, she was recruited to help manage a fledgling radio network in New York, and by the age of 25 was heard daily on 16 radio stations across the country.

Later, while a program manager at Sirius Radio, she began to gather voice over clients within and outside the company, and eventually decided to make voice acting a full-time career.

Since then (and after completing her first professional demo at Edge Studio), Haneen’s voice has been heard on national TV and radio commercial campaigns for Ford Motor Company, the American Cancer Society, Walmart, Humana, TRESemmé, the Ad Council and others. She has been an in-flight voice for Delta Air Lines and Air Force One, and regularly voices political ads in the U.S. and Canada.

Her corporate narration credits include Neutrogena, Verizon, eBay, Oral-B, Bravo TV, Pitney Bowes, Broadridge, the 92nd St. Y in New York City, and many others. She also regularly voices medical, telephony and elearning projects.

Haneen can still be heard every weekend on New York’s #1 radio station, WLTW 106.7 Lite fm, where she also hosts a weekly talk show/podcast with authors and local non-profits (under the stage name Nina Del Rio).

Haneen loves the challenge of voice acting, and is excited to help students find their voice, in a career that never feels like work!

Issa Deas

Private Coach

DEMO

Locations: In Studio (NYC), Remote (Skype/Telephone)

Specialties: Commercial, Narration

Pronounced “Lisa without the L”

A native New Yorker and artist from birth, Issa attended LaGuardia HS for visual arts and realized along the journey that he’d rather tell the story with his voice than with a brush.

He began his career with Edge Studio while working in business.  “In all my endeavors, communication was always my strength; reaching people and making an impact.  However, I never felt like the suit and tie life fit, it’s as if I was living someone else’s idea of what I should be.  That’s not living and it’s not the story I wanted to write for my life.  If I don’t enjoy what I’m doing…I’m not doing it and if it costs me to go my own way, I’ll gladly pay the toll.”

Starting from scratch, Issa studied comedic improv, acting, and voice over technique.  He has provided his storytelling talents to the likes of the NBA, Staples, Ubisoft, FanDuel and City of Hope to name a handful.

“The words ‘Voice Over’ can be slightly misleading as the most important part of what we do is tell a story.  The way we tell a compelling story is to connect with it as best we can.  No matter the genre, that should always be the primary goal.  If my voice is the body of the car, my spirit and intention are the engine.

Always strive to improve.  There is always room to learn something new from someone new.”

Always be better tomorrow than you are today…it’s the only rule I live by.

Specialties: Character, Commercial, Corporate, Documentaries & Film, E-learning, In-Show (Broadcast) Narration, Inspiration & Meditation, Narration, Telephony & IVR (Interactive Voice Response), Tours

James Andrews is a veteran commercial voice actor whose talents are always in demand. James has voiced hundreds of television commercials for clients such as Lincoln, Toyota, BMW, Chevrolet, Wrigley’s, General Mills, McDonald’s, Samsung, TD Bank, Bosch, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and many more. He has also voiced dozens of corporate narration projects and e-learning modules and has done promo work for such prestigious brands as Smithsonian and Sundance Channels. He is also well known for his character and animation work, as well as a wide variety of dialects.

Such diversity is based on a background equally varied. James holds degrees in English literature and education, and has a master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Prior to becoming a voice actor, James worked as a speech-language pathologist for several years.

James has also taught English literature and ESL at Columbia University and The School of Visual Arts in New York, and at the University of Toronto.

Although his voice-acting career keeps him very busy, James found he missed teaching, and so he was thrilled when the opportunity arose to join the Edge Studio faculty and work with students again. His background in speech-language pathology completes the unique skill set that he brings to voice-over education.

James lives in Toronto with his wife and two children.

Jay Snyder

Private Coach

Locations: In Studio (NYC), Remote (Skype/Telephone)

Specialties: Animation, Character, Commercial, In-Show (Broadcast) Narration, Narration, Video Games

Jay Snyder is a classically trained actor who has performed leading roles on and off Broadway, television, and film. His expertise is bringing characters to life. For more than 10 years he has also done nearly every type of voice over work, including commercials (recent clients include Verizon, Coke, Six Flags, Cisco, and Absolut), audio books, documentaries, tours, industrials, video games, animated films and cartoons. Since he is happiest diving into characters and stories, it’s no surprise that so much of his work has been in animation and audiobooks. Best known as the voice for the two lead characters of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and central characters in Pokemon, Sonic X, Kirby, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Chaotic, and Huntik, Jay feels fortunate to have worked on well over 100 different movies and series and literally thousands of episodes and hours of entertainment. As a self professed geek, he’s also psyched to have worked on the current Batman: the Dark Knight Rises video game as well as the critically acclaimed All Saints Row 2.

Even though not a week goes by without doing something in animation, as an actor his focus has shifted to audiobooks in the last few years. In that time he’s performed on over a hundred titles in various genres. Some of his favorites include Kurt Vonnegut’s wry Sci-Fi “The Sirens of Titan”, “Zoo” and “NYPD Red” two new titles from the prolific New York Times best selling regular James Patterson, and the CIA action/intrigue “The Gray Man” series which is currently in development for a film franchise starring Brad Pitt.

He has also directed VO for years, on many anime series, audio books, and video games. More recently he has become an Audio Producer, working for Marvel on their Marvel Knights Animation line. His first project for them was the “Astonishing X-Men”, a series written by Joss Whedon who also made the record breaking blockbuster film “The Avengers”. Next was “Iron Man: Extremis”, a story which has been confirmed as the basis of the next Iron Man film. After that came the best reviewed series from Marvel Knights, “Thor vs. Loki: Blood Brothers”. But perhaps more relevantly, Jay also audio produced an educational series for Disney/ABC News about World War 2 called “They Spoke Out.” Working with comic book legend Neal Adams, Jay helped to tell the tales you never knew about an era you thought you had learned everything about. As Audio Producer, he’s responsible for casting, directing, sound design, scoring, and the final mix. He does the casting and directing personally, and works side by side with a wonderful team of talented professionals who always do an outstanding job, providing clients with the best results.

Jay has also written for hundreds of shows, and is currently developing various animated series and films from adaptations to original concepts. Storytelling is his passion, and he loves every element of it, not just being the performer. Jay’s perspective is unique because he has experience with all aspects of capturing a performance. From the acting, to directing, casting, writing, and even the recording of a character.

So why does he teach if he’s so busy? Jay comes from a family of educators and says that teaching at Edge is wonderful because he genuinely enjoys providing people with whatever benefit his experience has to offer and he always learns something new from everyone he works with.

John Biondolillo

Private Coach, Class Instructor

DEMO

Locations: In Studio (LA), Remote (Skype/Telephone)

Specialties: Commercial, Narration

John’s natural sound sticks out but fits in: A quirky everyman, conversational with an approachable edge, attached to youth culture with the mindset of someone his own age, always emotionally invested. Think a young Harold Ramis or Ray Romano – he’s the advocate, the guy everyone asks for advice because he’s got just enough knowledge about a lot of things to be an ‘authority’ or dangerous or cool … at least in his own mind.

John was a radio DJ in a former life, then chased rock stars (“star” used loosely) across a few continents for a living, after attending college in Ohio. He’s been working as a voice and on-camera actor for in Los Angeles, seen or heard in national commercials for Coke, Little Ceasar’s, Ooma, King’s Hawaiian Bread, Cable One, Pei Wei and several others. He’s the loveable character, Ben the Dog in the children’s animated series, The Adventures of Annie and Ben, which currently boasts over 95 million views on the Hoopla Kidz Youtube platform.

As any working actor should, John continually trains and studies improv, scene study, acting for television and film, and of course, voice-over. Outside voice-over, he’s a stock market and financial news j****e, and homemade pasta and meatballs maker. Outside his voice-over booth and sometimes in, John is busy chasing his toddler son, George, with his wife around their home in Studio City, California.

Since then, John has been very active in the commercial, corporate narration, and animation genres locally and nationally. His voice over philosophy: Voice over is a means of engaging the listener. When done well, it can serve as a call to action – whether to support a cause, to learn about a topic, or to buy a car or a taco.

John has worked on hundreds of projects for clients including Cisco, Goldman Sachs, LogMeIn, Pepsi, Pfizer, Putnam Investments and many more. John was the voice of EMCOR (a Fortune 500 company) for many years. He was the first voice ever heard on NYC Media, doing the general and prime-time promos for the group’s launch and early years.

In addition to being a working talent at Edge Studio, John has used his voice over sensibilities in teaching group classes and coaching individual students at Edge. Bottom line – John strives to make voice over FUN!

Lara Hirner

Vocal Care Coach, Speech Pathologist

Locations: Remote (Skype/Telephone)

Lara Marie Hirner has unique skills that help voice-actors please more casting agents, impress more engineers, and book more jobs — especially long-form narration — by reducing abusive behaviors and techniques that contribute to vocal fatigue and throat discomfort, training proper coordination of breathing and speaking, decreasing mouth clicks and pops (which save editing time), and maintaining a healthier voice for a more lucrative and sustainable career.

There are definitely compromises voice actors are asked to make – long sessions that are demanding on the voice, certain affects (breathy, gritty, raspy…) that can, long term, damage your voice. Lara helps new and pro voice actors stay in business for longer and/or handle more work per day, by balancing good vocal health with the specific demands of voice over clients.

How? Combining her degrees as a Speech Language Pathologist, her experience as a professional voice actor (credits below), and her breathing techniques as a performance singer (credits below), she is happy to share her experience in the fields of performance, vocal pedagogy and therapeutic treatment with the Edge family to help foster a better understanding of the voice and how to best care for it when your career depends on it!

Lara is currently maintaining practice in Boston, MA. She graduated from Harvard University in June of 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as a participant in the Music Department’s Five Year Performance Program for voice. Theater credits include Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, Rapunzel in Into the Woods, the title role in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, and Cunegonde in Candide.

In concert work, she performs as a frequent soloist with the Mark Morris Dance Group, the New York City Ballet, the Juilliard Choral Union at Lincoln Center, the New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and was featured at the Bernstein Festival Gala Concert at Sanders Theater. She was a 4 year member of the Marble Collegiate Sanctuary choir and continues to perform with her vocal jazz quintet, West Side 5. In workshops, masterclasses, and concert performances, Lara has worked with Jason Robert Brown, Steven Schwartz, Mandy Patinkin, Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata, Christopher Hogwood, Robert Levin, and Judith Clurman.

In addition to her singing career, Lara has also appeared in several independent films and an animated feature which are currently in production. She maintains an active career as a voice over artist and has recorded three children’s audiobook series for Disney and the Smithsonian institute, and two audiobooks for Random House. She is also the voice of the online dating site, howaboutwe.com and regularly records teleprompts, children educational media and industrials for companies including WebSense, Chase, and EduJoy. She will also greet you on the Edge Studio voicemail system if you are ever calling after hours! She manages her voice over career with the help of Linda Weaver at Access Talent.

Lara currently holds Masters Degree Speech and Language Pathology from Columbia Teachers College and now practices as a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital inpatient team in Boston. During her training, she treated clients with a range of voice disorders and now provides vocal care consultations for professional voice users such as teachers, voice over artists, and singers.

As a voice coach, you will never hear me say the words “you’re not getting it”. I consider it my mission to try different approaches, techniques, and exercises until something clicks. My coaching style involves a lot of dialogue between teacher and student, and I like to use my sense of humor to keep things light and fun, even as I challenge you to go further than you thought possible.

When it comes to voice over, Noelle is very grateful to have had experience on both sides of the window. On the production side, she served as voice director and talent supervisor for the Emmy Award-winning PBS cartoon, “WordWorld.” She also directed various games and toys for The Backyardigans, Go, Diego, Go!, Dora the Explorer, as well as numerous children’s audio books for Scholastic. As Head of the voice over Department at Animation Collective, she oversaw the records and casting of nine shows produced for Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Cartoon Network, and AOL kids. Her TV production career started as an assistant to the Director of Animation on the original Blue’s Clues, where she recorded her very first voice over—the role of Magenta’s mailbox!

As a talent, she has been a voice for AT&T’s phone system for several years. Other voice over clients include the WNBA, Duracell, Acer, Hydralyte, Evol, Moe’s Southwest Grill, The Ohio Lottery, AAA, Volvo, Chevy, The National Archives, and many others. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Drama, and also trained in improv through Second City. As a live performer, she has four years of stand-up, and eight years of sketch comedy under my belt. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Andrew Feliciano, owner of Voice Trax West recording studio.
