ParticipantThanks for the feedback Chas! Glad that the music worked for 2 and 3. I actually saved 5 versions with different backgrounds; there was a lot that seemed to fit that script. Thanks for listening and giving input on that! I was trying to imagine what visuals would be in the background with each of them, so many ideas of what that would look like. Thanks again!

ParticipantThanks for the feedback Robert! Appreciate the noise level info; sometimes it’s hard to know what sounds too loud. For the first one I wanted to pick something really different musically (to me at least) which you don’t hear every day and which sounds like its stirring the p*t musically. Definitely did not want it to be too distracting.
I use Audacity too! The price is right 🙂 I download background music from http://www.looperman.com – sooo much stuff and it is also free! Then I googled how to add music to my recordings, and it’s actually very simple. First, do the recording and get it how you want it, then go to File – import – audio, select the music and it adds as a second track. I then adjust the gain to -14 db for the audio track at least (varies, depending on the track). You can cut and paste the loop as long as you need to match the length of the recording. If that does not make sense, Google can show you much better than my written description. Good luck and I’ll be waiting to hear a background from you! Thanks,
Mary

ParticipantHi Dan, good work on these! I liked all of them. I liked Acura the best of these three. I think you could lean into the humor a little more for McCholesterol’s and Harvey Home Theater, really emphasize certain words to pump up the energy. If you are coming from narration, it may even sound a little over the top in your head, but for both of those scripts you can push it and get great results. Good work!

ParticipantHi Mark! I don’t know if it was intentional, but there is a major echo throughout which made it really hard to hear what you were saying, as it was almost like there were 2 mics recording, a similar effect when you join a conference call with your phone and also are speaking into a headset that are next to each other. I started out just using a free app on my phone, just a suggestion. I hope that helps. Keep it up!

ParticipantHi Forceonature, good reads! I like the warmth in your voice, and the nice directness of it.
Script 1 – My favorite for you of these 3. Good variation in tone and inflection throughout, and there was a nice smile in your voice.
Script 2 – Good! I realize this is for practice, but you read “Matches” instead of “Match”, so just be aware of getting every word right (especially since it is the brand name being advertised)
Script 3 – “advances” was read as “advanced”. In this case I think advanced is more correct grammatically, so just something to watch. Really nice work, I want to hear more!Mary

ParticipantHi Mcsketcher, very nice! I like the nice variation in your voice for all of the various scripts, nice versatility! I’m starting to experiment with background music and really enjoying it. I find I have to always turn it down to -14 or -16 db at least so it stays in the background. On your last spot starting at about :45 seconds, I could hear either the background music OR your voice, but not both at the same time. The others sounded good from what I could hear, so maybe just adjusting down a little for some of them? Good work! Sounds really good.

ParticipantHey you are welcome Rogue! Sweetwater have really helped me out, their customer service is great. It is weird that your living room sound is better than a hall closet, but they were telling me that sometimes if it is a tiny closet with lots of clothes and things, but not much room to soundproof, it can deaden the sound too much. Sounds counterintuitive but I tried in one of my closets too and it sounded too flat. Also through Sweetwater you can send in the floor plan of your room if you draw it in Homestyler (free software, pretty quick to learn, just measure up your room first) and they will draw up a plan of what you need with all the specific sound panels, type, placement, etc. I started with that for my home studio / day office room, then did my closet, then ended up with a small PIB, the Isovox 2. So far so good! It would be good for Zoom calls actually, however, there is no camera in the one I am using, so if a camera is important for your Zoom, might be tricky unless you are using a phone for your video, then yes that would work. Good luck and let me know what you find out!

ParticipantHi everyone! Here is a read for any and all feedback. It is the same read for all 3 but with different music in the background. I’m working to get the sound levels right and also on making this one sound like it has a “call to arms” vibe. Let me know what you think! Thanks,
Mary
Think Different – Apple Commercial (1997)
Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.Attachments:

ParticipantHi Jasjo171, good work! I love the true crime genre too. I really enjoyed the performance – you have a warm, friendly voice and it was really well done, but I too am not hearing a more serious tone for the reads. Maybe try it with the thought in mind that Nancy Latham is your sister and you are reporting on how she narrowly escaped getting killed. Imagine how relieved you would feel after hearing this news. Maybe think about trying it with a level of personal concern and seriousness. Lead-ins are really helping me get into the feel of the scripts – for this one, it could be something like “Did you hear what happened to my sister Nancy?”
For the second read I would say the same thing, but it sounded a little more connected to me than the first read. Overall very good!
