Description

Voice over can be a fun and lucrative business, but success in this industry isn’t all about raw talent. Great acting skills and superb vocal technique are certainly at the core of a successful career in voice over. However, performance ability is only half of the required skill set. The other half is knowing how to successfully run a small business, and how to navigate the complex and ever evolving voice over industry. In voice over, you need to be the talent AND the business manager at the same time.

Edge Studio’s Business & Money 101 webinar will provide students with a review of the evolution of the voice over business, from the role of technology as a driver of change in the industry to an overview of the current voice over landscape. Your instructor will take you through step-by-step guidance on successfully starting a voice over business, including advice on accounting, what insurance you may need, unionization (whether or not you should go union or stay non-union), and getting established as a professional working voice talent.

At the conclusion of this class, students will:

  • Understand their personal motivations and immediate goals as a voice actor
  • Begin to develop a strategic five-year plan for your voice over business
  • Appreciate the commitment and persistence required for success
  • Discuss the history and evolution of the voice acting industry, and understand the role of technology in this historical context
  • Know how to use online resources like pay-to-play sites to grow their knowledge of the voice over business
  • Set their rates per industry norms, understand how voice acting services as priced, and appreciate the perils of what underpricing can do for your career and the voice over industry as a whole
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of corporate structures for your voice over business – sole proprietorship vs LLC
  • Appreciate the accounting and taxation requirements that may be applicable to your career
