Description

Modern technology has made the voice over market more accessible than ever. If you have a reliable internet connection and a good home studio setup, you can send out auditions for jobs all over the world! This means that when you submit an audition, you will be competing with many other voice talents. Talk to any working voice actor and they will all agree that delivering a great performance in the recording studio with a director is the easy part of their job – getting chosen over other actors as the voice for a project is more difficult.

At the heart of winning jobs is delivering successful auditions. As more voice over casting continues to move to online platforms, voice actors are expected to record quality performances in their home studios with little or no direction from the client or the casting director. So how can you possibly expect to win these auditions without the help of a director in your home studio?

Just like Edge Studio’s core VO private training, group classes are equally as instructive as VO private training. You’ll benefit from seeing how other students respond to direction, what choices they make, and what questions they think to ask. You may hear inspiring ideas you hadn’t previously considered.

The Audition 101 Class reviews the 3 main areas of auditioning:

1) Knowing where you get auditions:

  • Online casting sites like Voices.com
  • Agents and managers
  • Social sites
  • Direct marketing
  • Plus we discuss the pros and cons of each one

2) Knowing the key steps to book auditions:

  • Interpreting what the client wants
  • Breaking down the client’s objectives and directions
  • Knowing what to do with directions that are unclear
  • Analyzing the script / deciphering the copywriter’s thoughts
  • Acting professionally / coming across looking professional

3) And knowing what to do in everyday situations:

  • Slating. Should you? If so, what’s the best way?
  • Long auditions. Do you read it all?
  • How closely should you observe the client’s directions?
  • Can you change the script? Even a little??
  • Can you give different takes/reads/versions? If so, what should you know about this?
  • What should you do when an audition has a typo in it?
  • Should you watermark you recording?
  • Should you remove breaths?
  • Should you edit?
  • Do you have to send good quality?
  • How can you send in your auditions?
  • And how to best review your own work?

…students will read actual scripts as if they were real auditions for live critique by a qualified Edge Studio coach. Different scripts each class keep each class fresh and new, so no matter how many times you attend, you will always be able to learn something new!

  • Learn what elements a casting director looks for in the auditions, and develop a sense of what they want to hear
  • Gain essential skills to self-direct auditions, and to self-critique your performances to improve them prior to submission

  1. Wow, this class exceeded my expectations! Jenn Simms shared sooo many great resources and really encouraged us to ask questions and get some discussion going amongst the participants. I’m excited to try some of her ideas!!
