What is Raw Audio?

David Goldberg, Edge Studio

After 4 people within 3 days asked me, “what exactly is raw audio?” I figured I should post about it.

Curious what raw audio really means?

Well I’ll tell you. After owning Edge Studio for 37 years, and having completed 15,000 projects for voiceover clients, I can tell you with complete confidence that raw audio is however the client defines it

Some clients think “raw audio” is completely raw audio, meaning they want the full, original take with breaths, with mouth clicks, with space in between recordings.

Some clients say, “No, no, no, no, just get rid of all the mouth clicks and the breaths, and the dead space.”

Some clients say, “Well, look, we’re hiring you for good sound, so sure, put on some filters, get rid of the echo in your room, use your base trap, EQ out some frequencies,” and that’s what they define as “raw audio”.

See? Raw audio means something different to lots of people. So here’s my advice.

When a client says they want raw audio, it’s a terrific opportunity for you to:

  • Look great,
  • Show you care,
  • Show you are experienced,
  • and ask what they mean by “raw audio”. And let them know however they define it, you’re happy to provide it.

That’s what raw audio is.
