I’m going to comment on all three that you posted in this reply. I like your voice, but for some reason…there’s just something missing. Maybe it feels like you’re trying too hard? The tractor supply spot was the best of the three. I don’t know you, but it doesn’t feel like you, if that makes sense. Home Depot and Tractor Supply are perfect companies for your voice, though.

Hello! The first thing I notice is your breathing. Breathe before “embark” so you get the complete idea in your phrase. There are a few places where you pause when you should be reading through. I can hear your enthusiasm, which is good. Your youthful voice can be an advantage in this realm, I think, but it sounds like you’re holding back. Let loose, brother.

¡Gracias! I really appreciate you taking the time! Also, I remember you from our Technique 101 class, and I’m very excited to see where VO takes you. I could tell you have talent even in the short reads we were doing. ¡Que dios te bendiga en tu rumbo!

First things first. I know I will be hearing your voice in commercials in the future. You’ve got the raw goods.

In Nespresso, just about every sentence was a downward side. It made you sound bored. Contrast that with the Downy that had so much more variety and musicality in your delivery, which made you sound fun and friendly. I’d try it again reading the Nespresso with Downy inflections.

With the Downy, I’d really think about where the pauses are and why. Maybe fewer pauses would help it flow and solidify your friendliness. Also, try ending it with a smile and shrug.

Your voice is beautiful. Keep up the hard work!

Homework #1 I have 9 scripts here, and I thank you for your time and effort in advance. What do you hear? Any suggestions on sub-genres that I fit nicely?

You could say that the late 1800s saw the birth of the celebrity. Sure people had been famous before. Many gained fame for writing books, like Mary Shelley, and robbing banks, like Jessie James. Animation demo – BOOM, right out the gate with your amazing tone in the 1st vignette. After hanging out with you on the AMAs, I wasn’t expecting such a deep, rich voice. Now vignettes 2-5, I was noticing some enunciation issues that made it hard for me to understand what I was listening to right away, but then in 6-8, I felt you were back in the saddle. Number 7 is hilarious! I would maybe make that your #2 instead of the old west, so that your listener hears your acting range right away. Again, it took too long to understand what you were saying in 2-5, and the British accent in 3 could either fit for a very specific character someone is looking for or turn off the listener. If you like it, I’d say maybe switch it with #6 or put it at the end.

June henchman number 3 – I’m not sure which voice was yours. The narrator/main character has some lazy mouth. The Japanese character was great. But because I’m not sure who you were, I’m not sure what to critique.

Isolated Speech – Around the :56 mark, I could hear the editing, which is the bane of my beginner existence. If I remember correctly, you have a disability that you are overcoming, right? So what you are able to do is impressive. I noticed that ‘s’ before ‘t’ as in ‘past’ and the non-sonorous ‘th’ sound in ‘through’ might be difficult for you, as well as the ‘r’ sound. I wonder what you can do to work on that…I would have no idea.

In the end, your tone is great, and your animation reel was very fun to listen to. Keep up the hard work!!

The first thing I like is that you’re finding the moods that go with the scripts. On the Landmark script, I liked the 2nd half more than the first. You did well in conveying that you care. The 1st part where you describe what’s going on seems a little too harsh. I think (and who am I, right?) that using the same emotion from the 2nd half for the 1st half as well could be effective. On the truffles script, the “…irresistibly smooth, luscious…” part was well done. The rest was kind of flat. I know for me, in my mind I think I’m giving a lot of variation in my voice, but when I hear it back, I have to remind myself to go over the top because my over the top is what everyone else hears as normal. Other than that I would look up some enunciation exercises and be aware of rushing. Keep ’em coming!

Congrats on taking the steps to get your VO career going! Love your tone. You pacing is fine. Your voice conveys confidence. It feels like there’s something you’re holding back. Maybe your breathing? And it seems like it can affect your pronunciation at times. Keep up the good work!

Disclaimer: I’m no one. Take what I say with that in mind. 🙂

The first thing I noticed was the echo in your room. You’ll want to assess what you can put up to dampen the sound. Secondly, I loved your pacing, but there might be too much space between your sentences. I also hear the potential you have in making this a fun read. Are you smiling in this read? If not, that would be the first thing. Secondly, imagine that you just bought this fun box and you are so excited as you tell your best friend about this amazing deal! I love your voice! Punch it up a bit!
