Part 2: Putting the “Acting” in Voice Acting
If skillful, professional voice over performance could be summed up into one word, it’s “BELIEVABILITY.” Now’s your chance to bring that to every audition and every job.
Putting the “Acting” in Voice Acting is a performance-focused class designed to demystify acting techniques. This session moves beyond vague notes like “make it sound natural” and into how believable performances are built—so you’re not guessing, forcing emotion, or “putting it on.”
Built on foundational acting training and years of professional VO experience, and taught by pro voice actor and Edge Studio’s own Joshua Wise, you’ll learn to swiftly perform with intention, choice-making, and truthful engagement— necessary across all VO genres.
What You’ll Learn in This Class
1. Core acting principles—applied directly to voice over
You’ll get a-friendly breakdown of essential acting concepts, including intention, tactics, and basic Stanislavski principles—accessible to beginners and trained actors alike.
You don’t need a theatre degree; you need tools you can use at the mic. You’ll learn how acting choices drive sound, pacing, emphasis, and emotional truth, even when working with minimal text.
2. The difference between “putting it on” and “turning it on”
One of the biggest obstacles in voice acting is clearly effortful performance. This class clarifies:
- Why “trying to sound emotional” often backfires
- How forced performance shows up vocally
- Script breakdown and scene building that brings your clients in
- How to access truthful behavior without overthinking
You’ll begin to recognize when they’re trying, and when they’re in the zone—making performances more grounded, repeatable, and believable.
3. Believability as the goal—across all VO genres
Believability isn’t about realism; it’s about truth within the style. Through genre study, you’ll explore how the same acting principles apply across:
- Commercial
- Narration
- Promo
- Animation and character work
- And more.
Rather than changing “acting styles” for each genre, you’ll learn how consistent acting fundamentals adapt naturally to different formats.
4. Interactive cold script breakdowns
Students actively participate in cold script analysis, learning how to:
- Identify intention quickly with little to no specs
- Make clear, playable choices that convince listeners
- How much to decide before recording vs in the moment
- Interpret direction and give clients what they want
These breakdowns sharpen instincts and reinforce a repeatable process you can use in auditions, sessions, and self-directed work.
5. Questions, discussion, and shared discovery
Throughout the class, students are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and discuss observations. Hearing how others approach the same material often clarifies your own process—and deepens confidence in your acting choices.
Why This Class Matters
This is what transforms your “reads” into bookable takes:
- Sound authentic instead of “performed”
- Adjust quickly when given direction
- Stay present across multiple takes
- Create emotional truth without vocal strain
This class is ideal for beginners who want a strong acting foundation, as well as experienced voice actors who feel their reads are technically solid but lack consistency, depth, or believability. Actors from stage and screen will find value in adapting their experience to the microphone.
Benefits of the Acting Foundations Class
- A clear, usable understanding of acting for voice over
- Stronger, more truthful performances
- A repeatable approach to cold reads and auditions
- Greater adaptability across genres
- Increased confidence in self-direction
Acting isn’t about pretending harder—it’s about choosing clearly and responding truthfully.
